Flatten forms, annotations, and layers securely

What does Flattening a PDF mean?

When you create a PDF, especially one with forms, comments, or multiple layers, the document contains separate elements hovering over the page. Flattening a PDF merges all these separate layers into a single, uneditable layer.

Two Ways to Flatten

  • Flatten Forms & Annotations: This is the standard method. If you have a fillable PDF form that you have typed answers into, flattening it will lock your answers into the document so they can't be changed. However, the text in the document remains selectable and searchable.
  • Rasterize Everything (Image Only): This is the most secure method. It takes a "photograph" of every page and rebuilds the PDF entirely out of these images. This guarantees that absolutely nothing can be extracted, edited, or clicked. Note: The text will no longer be searchable or selectable.

Why use our tool?

Unlike other websites, our tool performs the flattening process locally in your web browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your documents are never uploaded to any remote server, meaning you get instantaneous results and absolute data privacy.

Key Concepts

Essential terms and definitions related to Flatten PDF.

Appearance Stream

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "flattening" a PDF mean?

Flattening merges interactive elements like form fields (text boxes, checkboxes) and annotations directly into the main document layer. This makes them permanent, un-editable text/graphics.

Why should I flatten a PDF?

If you fill out a digital form and send it to someone, they could potentially change your answers. Flattening the PDF before sending ensures your entries are locked and cannot be easily modified.

Can a flattened PDF be un-flattened?

No. Flattening is a permanent destructive action. Always keep a backup of the original fillable form if you need to edit it later.

Troubleshooting & Technical Tips

Common errors developers encounter and how to resolve them.

Checkboxes disappear after flattening

Some complex interactive PDFs use custom appearance streams for checkboxes that might not render correctly when flattened. We attempt to generate standard appearances for all fields.
